The hillbilly was a reference to a time when many people living in the Mountains did in fact brew their own liquor called Moonshine or (Mountain Dew).

Mountain Dew is another name for moonshine. Also called white lighting.

The Mountain Dew "Throwback" promotion that Pepsi has going on now is the REAL DEW. Try it. Just like you remembered. The Mountain Dew now is simply not the same.
